Choosing the Rules to Follow - with Chawne Kimber

And the meaning in the materials she chooses

Episode 063

It was SO great to sit down with Chawne Kimber and talk about her quilts. I was a huge fan of her work before I met her, and through the years of our friendship, my appreciation for both her and the work she makes has only deepened.

Much of her work has a deep intentionality in the materials and their origin, and Chawne integrates that with the meaning of the pieces. She’s also got the best sense of humor and play too, and I love it when she lets that loose.

Our convo covers a lot of her thoughts about making. She talks about rules - the ones that make sense to follow (like those that create integrity in construction) and those that should be heartily ignored. She speaks of having a machine set up with a small pile of fabric next to it to just sit and doodle - and by doodle she means sew the small pieces to just see what happens. Nothing like my process, but I’m planning to try the similar doodling (tho perhaps with other media) to just see what happens.

Getting a peek into another’s artistic process is such a treat, and a privilege too. I really hope you enjoy this one.
