Laura’s essay covers far more than the topic of word quilts, but I’m keeping the focus of my response to just that part.

My takeaway from Laura’s essay is that she finds word quilts a bit simplistic, pigeonholed in their era, and she prefers to be engaged through color and composition. My take is that word art is engaging, and that pretty much all art we see will be assigned to its era or movement in future times.

To be clear, my piece here is more counterpoint than criticism.

I love that Laura and I can each publish our own views. And also to be clear, she and I are cordial colleagues so none of this is about asking you, dear reader, to choose a side and defend it to the death! Let’s forgo that exhausting paradigm, shall we? I really enjoyed some of the points she made and how they gave me pause for new thoughts. I offer mine as another way to consider word quilts, and hope that between these two opinions, you find your own.

BACKGROUND

In case you didn’t know, I’ve always been a word-nerd. I got into fonts as a teenager, and have been paying attention to how words and images were used together in the Sunday comics (and later, everything from cereal boxes to editorial cartooning) since I was six years old.

I’m also pretty much a straight shooter, often to the discomfort of the people I love, because to know me is to occasionally be singed by my bluntness. I hope, fervently, that said beloved people also know how much I love them despite this mouth. In the inimitable parlance of my British family, I’m known for calling a spade a bloody shovel.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" communicate. When the words we speak can’t penetrate any more, art often can. And sometimes, that means using words in places you don’t expect to find them.

Laura posits that wordy quilts don’t leave you much room for interpretation. It’s all laid out, RIGHT THERE, and you have no where else to go with it, whereas a more abstract, non-verbal rendering of the concept gives the viewer more space for personal interpretation. For me… the more abstract works hit sometimes, but often miss. Sometimes it looks to me like the artist did the thing they usually do (abstraction, minimalism, improv, stripes, curves, transparencies, raw edges, prairie points even, etc.) and then named it something topical like “Heat Dome #17” - and I find myself adrift, not making the connection between the work and title. Ok… they made this during the era of heat domes being all over the news, but I’m not getting the relevance of the pink splotch to “heat” or “dome” - was this about strawberry crops? Pink flip-flops? The Pink Drink at Starbucks? (and I am not refering to an actual work here… just the idea of a fictional one)

I KNOW: This could easily look like I don’t want to think for myself, but my aforementioned friends and I can assure you that I am not without opinions, even when I’m not given a toe-hold into an artwork!

I know that many artists like to do their thing, and leave it up to the viewer to decide what it all means. But I WANT to know the story behind it. I’ve always wanted to know HOW the clock worked, not just that it was time for a cuppa. When it comes to art, I don’t want to look at a cacophony of color and think “nice use of blue,” I want to know that using that blue, to that artist, was about expressing something important to them. I want to GET what they were aiming for, FEEL it. I don’t want to miss the major plot line because I was busy trying to make sense of a splotch of pink in a weird place.

And I also want to say that not all art fails here for me. Much of what I admire transmits its meaning in a way that transcends any limitations in the medium or style of the work - or even its era. For instance, I can see Basquiat’s frenentic commentary on colonialism without reading a single word about it. I can see the quiet power of Artemisia Gentilleschi’s women without knowing the biblical stories that inspired them. Maybe, me not “getting” a work is a combo of it just not being what turns me on and the artist not hitting the mark - or at least not hitting it in a way that resonates for me.

SO: WORDY ART

Here’s the thing about words… once they are written where you can see them, it’s really hard not to read them. Think of trying to ignore closed captions on TV: I get so caught up in reading the words (even ones I can hear clearly) that I stop looking at the rest of the screen.

HOW you write words is as much a part of the art as WHAT you write - these are the tools of the word artist. You can write them in unmissably BOLD, plain language, standing as confrontationally tall as a billboard in a small space. You can make them so tiny most people give up after two sentences. You can hide them in layers, making the viewer really work for it. None of this is random, it’s by design: think legalese in a tiny font buried deep in the instructions; make it hard to read, and we WON’T read it.1

When done well, word art can look deceptively simple, yet the longevity of the work and its artists speak to their considerable skill. I offer the 50+year careers of Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, and Faith Ringgold as evidence. And their work is STILL relevant because we’re still dealing with the issues they made the work about.

<a class="image-link image2 worded message to convey meaning it leaves the viewer with no where else to go.”

I offer that maybe that was the point.

She writes: “ People either resonate with the words or they don’t (emphasis mine) And apparently there were a lot of attendees at QuiltCon this year who did not appreciate these messages.”

I offer that NO art resonates for everyone. And I bet there were plenty of non-word works at QuiltCon that were far from appreciated by the all the viewers2; I saw plenty online that were not my cuppa.

And for the record, many artists are not the least bit interested in making you comfortable. Quite the opposite sometimes.

Laura wishes they could have been more subversive, “less reliant on in-your-face messaging, which could’ve possibly drawn people deeper into the work, creating an opening where the quilt’s visuals moved them and then perhaps softened a hardened stance.”

I offer that maybe I’m not interested in a softened stance, nor am I interested in leaving enough room in my concept for you to completely miss my point. I don’t want you to imagine for a hot second that my (fictional) pink splotches might be a stand in for flowers when I’m talking about the number of children who die in the crossfire of war.

LOOK: Laura makes abstracted art quilts, I make wordy ones. OF COURSE we are adept at defending our views and our interests!

YOUR ART, YOUR VOICE

But here’s the the thing: it’s SO important that we write about these things, and especially about our OWN work.

After studying art history all the way up through an MFA, it became obvious to me that that finding primary source information about an artwork - the artist talking/writing about their OWN art, in the era/time/movement it was created - was the way to best understand the art, and where it sat in the overarching pantheon of history. So much canonical art history has erased or misrepresented everything except the art of the white men who controlled the canon. These days, I take with a grain of salt any art history or criticism that doesn’t include the voice of the artist, especially in contemporary art.

I wanted to know more about Laura’s abstract, improv art quilt “Your Mother. Your Daughter. Your Sister. Your Grandmother. You.” so I interviewed her about a year ago for the pod. I wanted to hear from her what she was reaching for when she made the work. Go listen to it here.

And incidentally, despite the work being abstract, and thus open for broader interpretation than its intent, it was banned from a show because the organization thought someone might interpret all that improv as the artist intended (via her statement), and get offended. Here we have a perfect example of a less in-your-face interpretation still not mitigating a hearty clutching of pearls!

One thing that is not up for interpretation is the lengths some people will go to get offended, and how far they’ll take the fight.

ANYWAY, BACK TO THE ART

Just to show you how my brain thinks, when I first saw an image of Laura’s art quilt without knowing what it was about, I saw a riot of red improv, done in a style I feel is common in the last dozen years of what we call modern quilting3; I needed the toehold of the interpretation to want to go deeper. I will also say I don’t have an improv bone in my body so most of the time I’m just impressed with the technicality of making all those seams lay flat… see, I’m already caught up in the construction puzzle. And none of how my brain or any one else’s works is in Laura’s, or any other artist’s control.

No one is for all art.

All art is not for everyone.

But I hope you take the time to decide what IS for you. I’ll be over here playing with words, working to make sure you get my point.

1

…so you can bury all sorts of terms and conditions in there that we would never agree to if it was both big enough to read without glasses, and written in non-obfuscating language.

2

Trying to make a universally beloved work is a fools errand - you’ll end up with the artistic equivalent of a beige 4 door sedan that offends few and thrills no one. And regardless of how much I don’t want to be pushed into a group mold, being pushed out of one stings like hot sauce in a paper cut. So I prickle more and avoid more, building a defensive shell of protection.

How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Every year it intrigues me, then I get caught up in a hundred other things and then it passes me by. I tell myself if I can’t start on the first day then the window is GONE. That if I don’t do it EVERY day perfectly, then I’m a failure.

Then I look at where those stories come from (Perfectionist parents? Patriarchy? Puritanically founded society?) and ya know, I’m exhausted with that TOO.

So screw that.

I’m gonna do it. Starting NOW (despite the official start date of 2026 being February 22). Who cares if I’m a bit late? Who cares if I miss a day? Certainly no one whose opinion I value more than my own with regard to my day-to-day capabilities!

I used to think such projects were about getting to 100 pieces of something in a programmed time frame. Perhaps the shortest timeframe. Or maybe an efficient one, especially if squeezed into a busy life. Ah, the sour smell of capitalism strikes again.

But I’ve been thinking about it differently this week. For me, it’s about creating a SPACE for something. That idea that you don’t FIND time as much as you have to MAKE it.

As to the what to make? Well, I’ve been pondering how to have more analog activity in my life. Stuff where my hands and eyes and brain are getting it together, but none of them are close to a screen. And that using my hands and eyes and brain together in a consistent-ish way for a few months will BUILD the muscle memory for doing even more with them.

I also think about the potential for happy accidents that could lead down exciting paths, like the ones my friends Mel Beach and Sarah Goer have shared with me.

The more I’ve been thinking about it, the more I wonder if the physical things I might output could be rather inconsequential when compared to the observation, the noticing, the slowing down, and the habit building that matter more.

So I’m going to mash up a couple of things I’m currently enjoying:

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" And given the planetary resource costs of keeping data centers running, not to mention the time to train AI to understand what you want, is it worth it for you.

We both agree that there are a few things that might be worth it - for instance, writing SOPs (standard operating procedures and the like). But what do you do if you want to preserve your writing voice? And how can you make sure it’s giving you good information? (Hint: you can’t… you still need to think critically and do your own research).

It’s a great discussion. We don’t necessarily reach an easy yes or no solution, but we came up with plenty of things to consider.

Subscribe now

Show Notes

Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hollymarshmallow/ @hollymarshmallow

Ecommerce Arcade - https://ecommercearcade.com/

Illustration Business - https://hollymarshmallow.com/

Fine Art Supply in Astoria - https://fineartsupplyastoria.com/

Shopify - https://www.shopify.com/

There’s a Reason Women Aren’t Swooning over AI Like Men are:
<div class="embedded-post-wrap" data-attrs="{"id":180813569,"url":"https://thenoosphere.substack.com/p/theres-a-reason-women-arent-swooning","publication_id":585796,"publication_name":"The Noösphere","publication_logo_url":"https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!7-BW!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F7d59c7ff-3ab7-40a2-bffb-7287fbe75252_1280x1280.png","title":"There's a Reason Women Aren't Swooning Over AI Like Men Are","truncated_body_text":"The Noösphere is an entirely reader-supported publication that applies recent social science research to the cultural, political, and technological issues shaping our …","date":"2025-12-05T17:15:50.951Z","like_count":10468,"comment_count":376,"bylines":[{"id":34757348,"name":"Katie Jagielnicka","handle":"katiejagielnicka","previous_name":"Katie Jgln","photo_url":"https://bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/862752b9-f4d5-477c-972f-3364fa3427c4_1833x2443.jpeg","bio":"Social scientist and writer pushing for a better humanity. Not only does she teach people how to take care of their own, but she now runs a program to train people as machine techs - something we’ll always need as long as we’re sewing!

Our conversation also got into the changing needs of the sewing public. While there are many of us taught to sew either in school or by our grandmothers - and in formal ways to make clothes, quilts, and other household items, Andi is seeing a huge trend of younger sewists interested in defeating fast fashion through making their own quality clothing, and lots of recycling and upcycling what we already have to keep it going longer.

Subscribe now

Show Notes

Website - https://www.andibarney.com/

Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@SewingDocAcademy

Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/asbarney

Ted Lasso - ‎Watch Ted Lasso - Show - Apple TV+‎Apple TV+https://tv.apple.com › show › ted-lasso

Vintage Elna Grasshopper - https://elnagrasshopper.wordpress.com/2011/12/25/an-introduction-to-a-grasshopper-part-1/

Janome Jem Gold - https://www.janome.com/product/jem-gold-660/

Libby Lehman - https://thequiltshow.com/quiltipedia/who-is-libby-lehman

Innova - https://innovalongarm.com/

Necchi - https://www.mynecchi.com/

Sewing Doc Academy - https://www.sewingdocacademy.com/

Portland Modern Quilt Guild - https://portlandmodernquiltguild.com/

The Powermind System: Twelve Lessons on the Psychology of Success by Michael Monroe Kiefer - https://amzn.to/48w6e4z

*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay more

How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. I enjoy her perspectives on things (see also our bonus recording with Daisy Aschehoug from EPM!) and honestly can’t wait to have another good gab with her… right after we both hit some deadlines!

Subscribe now

Show Notes

Website - https://libselliott.com/

Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/libselliott

YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/libselliott

Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/libselliott

Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/libselliott

Sneaky Dee’s Bar in Toronto, Canada - https://www.sneakydees.com/

Cliff’s PDX - https://www.cliffspdx.com/

Lib’s Textile Tour in Japan - https://kyotokimono.com/pages/trips-to-kyoto

Nancy McDonough - https://kyotokimono.com/pages/who-we-are

Sew Squad - https://sewsquad.libselliott.com/

European Patchwork Meeting - https://patchwork-europe.eu/en/home/

Luke Haynes - https://www.luke.art/

Zak Foster - https://www.zakfoster.com/

Productive Flourishing -
<div class="embedded-publication-wrap" data-attrs="{"id":2006124,"name":"Productive Flourishing","logo_url":"https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rfai!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F82755429-75ab-41aa-9da8-5fd6e4f1098a_320x320.png","base_url":"https://www.productiveflourishing.com","hero_text":"A community and newsletter focused on thriving in life and at work. I was a huge fan of her work before I met her, and through the years of our friendship, my appreciation for both her and the work she makes has only deepened.

Much of her work has a deep intentionality in the materials and their origin, and Chawne integrates that with the meaning of the pieces. She’s also got the best sense of humor and play too, and I love it when she lets that loose.

Our convo covers a lot of her thoughts about making. She talks about rules - the ones that make sense to follow (like those that create integrity in construction) and those that should be heartily ignored. She speaks of having a machine set up with a small pile of fabric next to it to just sit and doodle - and by doodle she means sew the small pieces to just see what happens. Nothing like my process, but I’m planning to try the similar doodling (tho perhaps with other media) to just see what happens.

Getting a peek into another’s artistic process is such a treat, and a privilege too. I really hope you enjoy this one.

Subscribe now

Show Notes:

Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cauchycomplete/?hl=en

Quilting for Dummies - https://amzn.to/3HA5EHU

Tonya Ricucci - http://lazygalquilting.blogspot.com/

Word Play Quilts - https://amzn.to/4fA8Akm

Bonnie Hunter’s Blog - https://quiltville.blogspot.com/

Cotton Sophisticate, 2015 (I’m Just a Sophisticated Cotton Picker) - https://www.internationalquiltmuseum.org/quilt/20210500002

The One for Eric - https://www.saqa.com/art/browse-collection/one-eric-g

Samantha Hoyt - https://www.agatheringofstitches.com/

Gather Here - https://gatherhereonline.com/

QuiltCon - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/quiltcon/quiltcon-home

Tara Faughnan - https://tarafaughnan.com/

Slow Poetry #1 - https://americanart.si.edu/artwork/slow-poetry-1-120751

Routed West: Twentieth-Century African American Quilts in California - https://bampfa.org/event/exhibition-tour-routed-west-twentieth-century-african-american-quilts-california

Of Salt and Spirit: Black Quilters in the American South - Curated by Dr. Sharbreon Plummer - https://www.msmuseumart.org/exhibition/of-salt-spirit/

Unconventional & Unexpected By Roderick Kiracofe - https://www.quiltfolk.com/product/unconventional-unexpected/

Tracey Emin - https://www.instagram.com/traceyeminstudio/?hl=en

*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay more

How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. Latifah used her background in engineering to create the Clammy™ and HuRTy™ rulers and the patterns that use them.

We talk about choosing when and where to grow a business, and also when and where to scale back as circumstances demand (Latifah cared for her elderly grandfather until he passed), a tango of experimentation and refinement as circumstances dictate or allow.

Finally, we talk about the importance of speaking up for each other within our industry, making safe spaces for our colleagues that have historically not been safe, and creating broader communities that are inviting and inclusive.

Subscribe now

Show Notes

Website - https://www.latifahsaafirstudios.com/

Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/latifahsaafirstudios/

Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/latifahsaafirstudios

YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@LatifahSaafirStudios

Los Angeles Modern Quilt Guild - https://lamqg.org/

Jacquie Gering - https://www.jacquiegering.com/

Alissa Haight Carlton - https://www.alissahaightcarlton.com/

The Modern Quilt Guild - https://www.themodernquiltguild.com/home

The Clammy™ I immediately bought the book (solidarity!) and thought what a cool woman, I hope to meet her some day!

Well friends, that day happened and it was such a great convo. We talk about both the support and reactions to her books (the second one has lovely messages of self care - and a relatively equal ratio of cuss words, all supported by her publisher)

We talk about the political aspects of stitching, but also the practical, financial, accessible, and ergonomic aspects of it too. Being in any creative field that calls upon your body demands that you figure out how to do it without hurting yourself!

Stephanie’s theater background has inspired and informed some of the words she stitches, but stitching was also a way to busy her hands while calming her mind in theater productions and rehearsals. All that stitching eventually turned into a business.

She loves to teach - but even more than that, She’s a huge proponent of just stitching any way that works for YOU. No perfect backs, unless you want them to be - just have fun doing it!

Subscribe now

Show Notes

Website - https://stephxstitch.myshopify.com/

Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/stephxstitch

Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/stephxstitch

Stephanie’s first book, Feminist Cross Stitch - https://stephxstitch.myshopify.com/collections/feminist-cross-stitch-book/products/signed-feminist-cross-stitch-hardcover-book

New York Times on Feminist Cross Stitch Book - https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/16/us/feminist-cross-stitch.html

Second Book, Self Care Cross Stitch - https://stephxstitch.myshopify.com/collections/feminist-cross-stitch-book/products/signed-self-care-cross-stitch-hardcover-book

Kay’s Creation stands - http://www.kscreations.com/floorframes.htm

*Ball Tip Needle for Cross Stitch - https://amzn.to/452WsoA

Subversive Cross Stitch - Julie Jackson - https://subversivecrossstitch.com/

One of the best sellers - C-word kit - https://stephxstitch.myshopify.com/collections/cross-stitch-kits/products/kit-c-unt-c-word-funny-feminist-subversive-cross-stitch-supplies-diy-kit-supplies

C-word pattern - https://stephxstitch.myshopify.com/products/pattern-mature-c-nt-floral-cross-stitch?_pos=5&_sid=7aeb910d3&_ss=r

Behold the field kit - https://stephxstitch.myshopify.com/products/behold-the-field-in-which-i-grow-my-fucks-cross-stitch-kit?_pos=1&_sid=308e029b4&_ss=r

And pattern - https://stephxstitch.myshopify.com/products/copy-of-behold-the-barren-field-in-which-i-grow-my-fucks-cross-stitch-art?_pos=2&_sid=308e029b4&_ss=r

Moo Deng pattern - https://stephxstitch.myshopify.com/products/moo-deng-become-ungovernable-pdf-cross-stitch-patern?_pos=2&_sid=709972434&_ss=r

*Let’s Move the Needle - by Shannon Downey - https://amzn.to/4olIs0w

*Affiliate link - I might make a commission but you don’t pay more

How to Own a Revolutionary Craft Biz is a reader-supported publication. She was recently the keynote speaker at QuiltCon 2025, and the attendees got to see her exploration of her maximalist traditional quilts in a lovely solo exhibition.

Tara talks about finding the rhythm in her color palettes, which I find to be very distinctive! We talked about collaborative processes, and Tara says that while she collaborated a lot when she was designing textiles, she doesn’t look for collaboration when designing her quilts.

We talk about how she researched the data she presented in her keynote about how poorly represented women in in museums, fine arts, galleries, and collections, and that despite occasionally thinking she should be come a painter to garner more art-world respect, she always returns to the women-driven lineage of quilting - and how much she values being part of that lineage.
